ometimes, you just know. Have you ever been presented with an opportunity or situation, and you instantly knew that it was perfect?

Perhaps it was when you met your spouse for the first time. Or when you decided to go into teaching. Or when you finally got the car of your dreams. It is a feeling that you get. And it does not happen very often.

That is how I felt when I realized that Achieve3000 was going to become a part of the McGraw Hill family. It was as if everything we have learned at Achieve3000, all our wonderful products, and all our wonderful people, were now focused with additional resources, enthusiasm, and the greatest track record in the history of education.

For those of you who know me, you know my entire career has been about helping children. It has been my greatest wish. My greatest dream. For 30 years now, the betterment of our children has filled my days and far too many of my nights. And now, McGraw Hill has entered the arena.

Am I happy? I cannot honestly say it is quite the same feeling as catching my wife’s gaze for the first time all those years ago, across a crowded room. Or finally buying my dream car, completely restored down to the frame. But I am happy. And more than a little bit grateful. McGraw Hill is coming in at the perfect time. And they are perfectly situated to bring exactly what our learners need. They are the perfect complement, bringing resources to areas where we need an assist, and being wise enough to appreciate the areas where we are making substantial progress.

In short, bringing more of what our learners need, in just the right amounts, at just the right time.

Oh yeah! I am happy.

These are great times to be in education, and a great time to be with Achieve3000. I believe you will see positive changes almost immediately. But more importantly, you will continue to see everything you already love about Achieve3000. And more.

Be sure and read our cover story in this issue of Achieve Magazine. It is an article by Dr. John Nelson on recovering learning loss. Dr. Nelson believes the answer lies in the power of focus and asks, “How can we use this current challenge as an opportunity for change in our school culture?” The article is fascinating, and our learners are sure to be the beneficiaries.

Also, in this issue, Kevin Baird offers a little neuroscience to help you understand how to engender trust in the classroom. According to Baird, “At Achieve3000, a critical component of our design is to ensure that text difficulty is within each students’ Zone of Proximal Development — not too hard, not too easy, but a level of challenge which stretches student skills while rewarding them with success. Students come to predict that they will succeed when reading Achieve3000 content. It’s that simple. As well, students are not “punished” with repetitive practice if they fail, or with negative indicators like decreasing levels or “points.” Achieve3000 is a highly predictable experience of success with few if any triggers for distrust.

“Trust is also at the heart of the Achieve3000 organization. Our teachers and school partners trust us to deliver experiences which accelerate student learning, and to respond to their needs when a concern arises.

“That’s a big reason we became part of the McGraw Hill family of learning solutions. As one of the oldest, most respected publishers in education with a strong track record of helping teachers and responding to educator concerns, McGraw Hill is a partner we can trust because they are a provider that educators have trusted since 1888.

“In November, as we become full partners in meeting the needs of schools to accelerate literacy, math, and comprehension skills, Achieve3000 and McGraw Hill will continue to deliver future, predictable positive results. That is the foundation of trust; for our school partners, and for student confidence.”
